I first got into Cocteau Twins through my sister way back in 1984. I remember her listening to Treasure and I initially laughed at my sister, it sounded odd and like nothing I had heard before - “She’s not even singing any lyrics!!” but I think part of me loved it! I was 11. When I was 13 or 14 I decided to buy another Cocteau Twins album and bough Garlands. At the time it wasn’t what I was expecting and I kinda stopped listening to them.
Fast forward to 1989 and I visited my sister who had gone off to University. In the flat share she was living in I found the Blue Bell Knoll LP tucked away inside the records. I smuggled it out with me and took it home to listen to.
When the opening chords of Blue Bell Knoll came on I have to admit to thinking it was the most amazing sound I had ever heard, once again it sounded like nothing else I had ever heard. I had no idea where this music was coming form! I played that song over and over again and is still one of my favourite Cocteau Twins.
